How to Replace Excel with a Custom Business App

Excel is a great tool — up to a point. Almost every company I talk to has at least one “important spreadsheet” that part of the business runs on: order records, shift planning, inventory, commissions. And almost always with the same problems.

Signs Excel is no longer enough

If you nodded at two or more points, the spreadsheet no longer solves a problem — it is the problem. The time your team spends maintaining it and fixing errors usually far exceeds the cost of a proper solution.

What replacing Excel looks like

This isn't about building a “big system”. A custom business app is typically a simple web application everyone signs into from their computer or phone, seeing exactly what they should see. One version of the truth, role-based permissions, change history, and automation of the routine — automatic invoicing, deadline tracking, or an accounting integration.

What it costs and how long it takes

A first working version that replaces the most painful spreadsheet usually fits within CZK 150,000–400,000 and 4–8 weeks of development. There's no big bang: the app first runs alongside Excel, the team gets used to it, and only then is the spreadsheet retired. Your Excel data gets imported — no history is lost.
